Trump Budget Threatens Senior Programs to Pay for Tax Cuts for the Wealthy

After their latest failed attempt to deny healthcare for millions of Americans, President Trump and GOP Congressional leaders are doubling down on their efforts to push through a damaging budget that prioritizes tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations at the expense of services and programs that support working families.  In addition, Congressional Republicans are considering adding provisions into the budget which would sabotage our healthcare system, build a border wall and fund more private prisons to lock up immigrants.

These efforts are a direct affront to working people who are fed up with a political and economic system that is rigged against them.

Members of Congress and our president should be creating good jobs, investing in education, and supporting the ability of working people to stick together in unions to make their voices heard. Instead they are attempting to use the same budgetary gimmicks they employed during the healthcare debate to ram through tax cuts for corporations, millionaires and billionaires with only Republican support.

The programs they are proposing to slash in order to pay for their tax cuts to corporations aren’t just important to the people who rely on them to pay the bills. States rely on this funding for their own budgets and will be forced to cut even deeper to make up for less money from the federal government. Cities and counties would feel the pain too, as the budget pressure trickles down to local government. This will put jobs at risk, costing people their jobs at the same time corporate CEOs are seeing their paychecks get bigger and bigger.

SEIU members and our allies are fighting back against these efforts, just as we have stymied attacks on our healthcare.

Congress is in the process of making decisions about funding the federal government and passing a tax cut package paid for by gutting basic living standards. As they do this, we will join together to raise our voices, as we do every day as union members, on the need to create good jobs and help working Americans thrive – without wasting one penny on tax cuts for millionaires, billionaires and corporations.  From water inspectors in Flint to bus drivers who get our children to and from school safe and sound in Florida, we will unite together to ramp up the home-grown pressure we need to protect our communities.
