Everyone has a right to healthcare so that our families and communities can thrive. Medicaid is the largest health insurance program in the country, providing healthcare to more than 80 million people, including nearly half of our nation’s children. 77% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Medicaid.
Medicaid covers one in four Americans – seniors, kids, working moms and dads, veterans, people of color, rural Americans, and people with disabilities. It funds the jobs of healthcare workers who care for our loved ones in hospitals, nursing homes, and through home care. Medicaid funding is an important part of state budgets and covers things you may not even think about – like special education, care for foster kids, and mental health services.
Republicans are proposing a budget that will slash state budgets and critical public services.
- Medicaid covers six in ten nursing home residents. Slashing Medicaid would dramatically decrease the quality of care in our nursing home across the state.
- For 60 years, states and the federal government have shared responsibility for Medicaid. In Michigan, federal dollars for Medicaid total approximately $17.8 billion and pay for about 76% of the program costs, with the state covering the rest.
- Cutting Medicaid means hiring freezes and no raises for dedicated public workers. We’ll see run down and overcrowded schools, less access to childcare, and fewer community resources, like affordable housing and nutrition programs, that support a public safety net and promote equity.

When we unite across every race and every place we can hold Congress accountable and make it clear: Medicaid Saves Lives. We won’t allow them to take healthcare from millions and put our communities at risk just to give trillions in tax cuts to corporations and the mega rich.
