DETROIT, MI —  On the 60th anniversary of Medicaid and Medicare, and in the wake of the passage of federal Medicaid cuts, Charlesetta Wilson, the Director of Nursing Homes at SEIU Healthcare Michigan, released the following statement:

“July 30 marks 60 years since the signing of the legislation that established Medicaid and Medicare, programs that have been a lifeline for millions of seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income families. But instead of honoring that legacy, we’re facing a historic crisis. The federal government passed devastating Medicaid cuts that will strip coverage from hundreds of thousands of Michiganders and gut funding for the caregivers who keep our healthcare system going. These cuts threaten the health, stability, and dignity of working-class communities across our state.

“The Michigan Legislature must act. Healthcare workers are already doing more with less, caring for more patients with fewer staff and fewer resources. These cuts will deepen the staffing crisis, force layoffs, and drive workers out of a profession they love but can no longer afford to stay in. With the state budget still in play, Michigan lawmakers must take action to protect Medicaid funding and the people who rely on it. On this anniversary, we call on them to choose care over cruelty, and to stand with the Michiganders who depend on it.”
